Biography
The Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston in January 1986. Singer and rhythm guitarist Black Francis (Charles Thompson) and lead guitarist Joey Santiago met as neighbours at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, then recruited bassist Kim Deal through a newspaper ad, with drummer David Lovering joining on her husband's suggestion.[4]
Their loud-quiet-loud dynamics, surreal lyrics and the 1988 debut Surfer Rosa made them a touchstone of alternative rock, and Kurt Cobain credited the record as a direct influence on Nirvana.[3]
