The Glow Pt. 2
About this Album
The Glow Pt. 2 is the third full-length album by The Microphones, the project of Phil Elverum of Anacortes, Washington. It was recorded between May 2000 and March 2001 at Dub Narcotic studio in Olympia, Washington, on a 16-track analog tape machine, often by Elverum alone in the early morning, and released on September 11, 2001 through K Records.[1]
The record grew out of the end of a romantic relationship and draws on extreme metal, ambient music, the avant-garde, and the television series Twin Peaks. Recurring images include fire, water, blood, fog, wind, and foghorns, along with the "glow" motif introduced on the previous Microphones album.[1][2]
Pitchfork rated it 9.2 and later named it the best album of 2001. It is widely regarded as the defining Microphones record and a landmark of lo-fi indie, though some retrospective critics have found it meandering.[1][3]
