The Microphones

Person

Biography

The Microphones is the recording project of Phil Elverum, a musician from Anacortes, Washington, whose home region, with its coast, fog, and foghorns, runs through his work.[1][2]

The project's breakthrough album, The Glow Pt. 2, was recorded at Dub Narcotic studio in Olympia between 2000 and 2001, largely alone and on analog tape, and released through K Records on September 11, 2001. It drew on the end of a relationship with the musician Khaela Maricich, as well as extreme metal, ambient music, and Twin Peaks.[1]

The record was met with strong reviews, and Pitchfork later named it the best album of 2001.[1][3] In 2013 Elverum said the music felt like it belonged to another person, but he revisited the period on Microphones in 2020.[4]

The Microphones albums have been reissued on his own label, P.W. Elverum & Sun, Ltd.[1][5]
