About this Album

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is the tenth studio album by The Flaming Lips, released on July 16, 2002 by Warner Bros. Records.[1] It was recorded between June 2000 and April 2002 at Tarbox Road Studios in Cassadaga, New York, with the band and Dave Fridmann producing alongside Scott Booker.[1]

The record follows The Soft Bulletin and pushes further into electronic territory, mixing programmed beats and acoustic guitars with influences from hip hop and Top 40 pop.[1] The title character was inspired by Yoshimi P-We of Boredoms and OOIOO, whose unusual singing reminded the band of battling monsters. Many listeners treat the album as a concept album, though Coyne has said it was not intended as one.[1]

It received universal acclaim (84 on Metacritic), reached number 50 on the Billboard 200, and was certified gold in the US in 2006.[1] The instrumental Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia) won the 2002 Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.[1]
