Biography
Bill Callahan, born William Rahr Callahan on June 3, 1966, in Silver Spring, Maryland, spent his early childhood partly in Knaresborough, England, and his parents worked as language analysts for the National Security Agency.[1]
He began making homemade four-track recordings under the name Smog, and after signing to Drag City his records grew more polished and fully instrumented.[1] In 2007 he released Woke on a Whaleheart under his own name, saying the Smog name no longer appealed to him.[1] He was in a relationship with Joanna Newsom from 2004 to 2007.[1] His later albums include Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle (2009), Apocalypse (2011), Dream River (2013) and Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest (2019).[1]
