Biography
Cap'n Jazz was a five-piece band from Buffalo Grove, Illinois, in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, active from 1989 to 1995 and now regarded as a cornerstone of midwest emo.[1]
The group grew out of a teenage band called Toe Jam, formed by brothers Tim and Mike Kinsella with Victor Villarreal and Sam Zurick, friends from Wheeling High School.[1][3] Tim sang and played French horn, Mike moved to drums, Villarreal played guitar and Zurick bass. Davey von Bohlen, who had played in a Milwaukee band, joined on guitar in 1993.[1][3] According to the band's origin story, the new name came when Zurick blurted it out over a bowl of cereal.[3]
Their sound drew on Fugazi and the Dischord catalogue, along with Jane's Addiction and Dinosaur Jr.[1] Tim later insisted that they never thought of themselves as an emo band, calling them a weirdo punk band.[3] They released a handful of singles and compilation tracks in 1993, then recorded their only full-length over five days in December 1994 with producer Casey Rice.[1][3]
The band broke up in July 1995, soon after a tour began, when Villarreal had a health emergency in Little Rock, Arkansas.[3] The members scattered into influential projects: Tim founded Joan of Arc, Mike formed American Football, and von Bohlen started The Promise Ring.[3] A 1998 anthology on Jade Tree, Analphabetapolothology, gathered nearly everything they recorded and brought the band a far larger audience.[2] They reunited in 2010 and have played occasional shows since, including a 2025 tour marking the 30th anniversary of their album.[1]
