Grouper

PersonFormed 1980

Biography

Grouper is the solo project of Liz Harris (Elizabeth Anne Harris), an American musician, artist, and producer born on July 15, 1980, in West Marin, California.[1] She grew up in a commune inspired by the teachings of George Gurdjieff, whose members called themselves The Group, a name that partly inspired her own.[1] She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of California, Berkeley.[1]

Her first album, *Grouper* (2005), was a self-released CD-R, and she went on to make hazy, tape-soaked records of guitar, reverb, and buried voice. *Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill* (2008) was her breakthrough, with clearer melodies and structure.[2] Later work includes *A I A* (2011), *The Man Who Died in His Boat* (2013), *Ruins* (2014), *Grid of Points* (2018), and *Shade* (2021).[1] She also performed the eight-hour *Circular Veil* at Club Transmediale and curated the 2017 Le Guess Who? festival.[1]

She has collaborated with Xiu Xiu, Roy Montgomery, The Bug, Lawrence English, and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, among others, and lives in Astoria, Oregon, where she runs the label Yellow Electric.[1]
