Biography

Lush were an English rock band formed in London in 1987, originally under the name the Baby Machines. The founding line-up included school friends Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson (who had previously published the Alphabet Soup fanzine together), drummer Chris Acland and vocalist Meriel Barham, with Steve Rippon on bass.[1]

They signed to 4AD in 1989 and were associated with the shoegaze scene, citing Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine among their influences. Albums followed with Spooky (1992) and Split (1994).[1]

Their third and final album, Lovelife (1996), adopted a Britpop-oriented sound and became their best-selling record, with the hits "Single Girl", "Ladykillers" and "500 (Shake Baby Shake)". After drummer Chris Acland died in October 1996, the band went on hiatus and officially disbanded in 1998. Berenyi, Anderson and Phil King reunited with drummer Justin Welch in 2015 and 2016.[1]
