Biography
Olivia Rodrigo is an American singer-songwriter born Olivia Isabel Rodrigo on February 20, 2003, in Murrieta, California, and raised in neighboring Temecula.[1] She is the only child of a schoolteacher and a family therapist, and she is half-Filipina.[1] She began vocal lessons at five, piano at nine and guitar by twelve, absorbing the alternative rock favorites of her parents.[1]
She worked first as an actor, starring in the 2015 film *An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success*, then in the Disney Channel series *Bizaardvark* and Disney+'s *High School Musical: The Musical: The Series*.[1] She signed with Geffen Records in 2020, negotiating ownership of her masters, and released her debut album *Sour* in 2021, which topped the Billboard 200 and included the chart-topping singles "Drivers License" and "Good 4 U".[1]
Her second album, *Guts* (2023), also debuted at number one, as did its lead single "Vampire".[1] She won three Grammy Awards at the 2022 ceremony, including Best New Artist, and has cited Taylor Swift, Lorde, Courtney Love and Kathleen Hanna among her influences.[1] Her third album, *you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love* (June 2026), is led by the single "drop dead", which made her the first artist to have the lead singles from her first three albums debut at number one on the Hot 100.[1][2]
Rodrigo has collaborated with Dan Nigro throughout her career, and she shared stages with The Cure's Robert Smith at Glastonbury in 2025 and Primavera Sound in 2026.[1] She also founded the charity Fund 4 Good in 2023.[1]
The new album was produced and largely co-written with Nigro, and Rodrigo has said it draws on her time in London and is her most experimental work yet. It traces a single relationship from infatuation to decline and closes with "Cigarette Smoke", a five-minute ballad written with Nigro that turns blame toward the ex.[3]
Her musical tastes lean toward post-punk and new wave as well as pop: besides Taylor Swift and Lorde, she has named the White Stripes, The Cure, New Order, Depeche Mode and Siouxsie and the Banshees as influences.[1]
On June 29, 2025, she headlined the final day of Glastonbury on the Pyramid Stage, with Robert Smith of The Cure joining her for two songs. A year later she debuted "What's Wrong With Me" with Smith at Primavera Sound, her first collaboration on an original song, before releasing it on her third album.[1][3]
Rodrigo returned to Saturday Night Live as host on May 2, 2026, opening with a monologue about her Disney Channel beginnings and a parody of "drivers license," and performed the unreleased ballad "Begged" as musical guest the same night.[4] She has said she wrote that song in a single sitting at around 3 a.m. in a London hotel room.[5]
