Biography

The Fray is a rock band from Denver, Colorado, formed in 2002 when Isaac Slade and Joe King reconnected at a local record store and began holding regular songwriting sessions. Three of the four original members attended the same Denver-area Christian school, and the band spent their early years leading worship in Denver churches before establishing themselves as a live act in the city's venues.[1]

For most of their career the band's lineup consisted of Joe King (rhythm guitar, co-lead vocals), Isaac Slade (piano, primary lead vocals and songwriter), Dave Welsh (lead guitar), and Ben Wysocki (drums). The band's name was chosen from a pool of suggestions written by each member on paper.[2]

Their debut album How to Save a Life arrived in 2005 on Epic Records and ultimately went four-times platinum in the United States. The title track achieved broad cultural resonance after prominent placement in the television series Grey's Anatomy, and the band ranked #84 on Billboard's Artists of the Decade list. Their self-titled 2009 follow-up debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, with singles including You Found Me. Subsequent records Scars & Stories (2012) and Helios (2014) continued their commercial presence before the band went on official hiatus in 2019.[2]

In March 2022, Isaac Slade announced his departure from The Fray following a series of onstage panic attacks and a decision he had been considering for years. He now operates a record store on Vashon Island, Washington. The remaining trio of King, Welsh, and Wysocki spent several years determining whether and how the band could continue, ultimately committing to move forward.[3][4]

The band released their comeback EP The Fray Is Back in 2024 and celebrated the twentieth anniversary of How to Save a Life with a major international tour encompassing more than twenty US cities and twenty-eight sold-out international dates. Their fifth studio album A Light That Waits followed in March 2026, the first on which all three remaining members co-wrote every track together, and was supported by the Summer of Light Tour co-headlining with Dashboard Confessional.[5][6]

With King assuming lead vocal duties, the band has articulated a renewed commitment to the emotional honesty that defined their earliest work. King has spoken about the necessity of vulnerability in songwriting, describing the band's spirit as rooted in songs that are "nothing but true and honest," and has named the internal contradictions of human experience as a central source of creative energy.[7][8]
