Beach House

Biography

Beach House is a dream pop duo from Baltimore, made up of vocalist and keyboardist Victoria Legrand and guitarist Alex Scally.

The pair work as a deliberate two-person project, having decided against adding a permanent member, and they assemble their records in their Baltimore practice space[5]. By the time of their fourth album, Bloom (2012), they had played the songs of the previous record, Teen Dream, at more than 180 shows, and Scally has said that fatigue pushed them to write something new rather than repeat it[4].

Bloom was recorded at Sonic Ranch in Texas with producer Chris Coady and became their highest-charting album, debuting at number seven on the Billboard 200[2]. Its lead single, Myth, was certified gold in the United States in 2023[1]. Legrand and Scally describe their approach as avoiding safe choices, and they favor songs open enough that listeners can attach their own lives to them[5].

They debuted in 2006 with lo-fi, four-track recordings, and their sound has drawn comparisons to Spiritualized, Slowdive, and Yo La Tengo[6]. After touring Bloom with live drums, the duo felt stifled and returned to drum machines and simpler arrangements for their fifth album, Depression Cherry (2015)[6]. Legrand speaks about music in spiritual terms, and the band has a reputation for keeping its music out of commercials, having declined a Volkswagen licensing offer[7]. Their song Space Song became a sleeper hit after going viral on TikTok in 2021[8].
