Biography
Pavement formed in Stockton, California, in January 1989 as a studio project of Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg, who recorded as S.M. and Spiral Stairs.[1] Their early lo-fi EPs were recorded at the home studio of drummer Gary Young, with Bob Nastanovich joining on percussion and Mark Ibold on bass around 1991.[1]
Their debut album, Slanted and Enchanted, appeared in 1992 after circulating on cassette for nearly a year, and is often cited as one of the most influential indie rock albums of the decade.[1] Steve West replaced Young on drums in 1993.[1]
The band ended after a final concert at London's Brixton Academy on November 20, 1999, and reunited for shows in 2010, including a Stockton appearance where Young joined them for encores.[1]
