Biography

BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan, often translated as "Bulletproof Boy Scouts" or "Beyond The Scene") is a seven-member South Korean group who debuted in June 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment (now HYBE)[12]. The members are RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook. From their earliest records, BTS distinguished themselves in K-pop by writing and producing much of their own music, emphasizing themes of youth, identity, mental health, and social pressure.

The group built their global fanbase, known as ARMY, through social media and relentless touring before achieving mainstream Western breakthrough in 2018, when they became the first K-pop act to top the U.S. Billboard 200[12]. They went on to place six albums at number one on that chart and performed at stadiums across North America, Europe, and Asia.

In June 2022 BTS announced a hiatus for solo projects. All seven members subsequently fulfilled South Korea's mandatory military service obligation, with the last completing their service by June 2025[12]. The group reunited at J-Hope's solo concert and traveled to Los Angeles, where they spent approximately two months in intensive collaborative songwriting and recording sessions[4].

During the hiatus, each member pursued solo work that deepened their individual artistic identities. J-hope became the first Korean solo artist to headline a major American festival, performing at Lollapalooza in 2022. SUGA released the final installment of his acclaimed Agust D trilogy, which collectively reached the Top 5 of the U.S. Billboard 200. Jung Kook's debut solo album Golden (2023) was a major commercial success, and Jimin's FACE became the first solo album by a K-pop artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200.[5] These independent stints gave each member, in the words of critics, a "sharper creative identity" that would eventually reshape BTS's group dynamic on their return.[2]

The result was ARIRANG (March 20, 2026), BTS's fifth studio album and their first full-length release together since before the hiatus. The album's title references Korea's unofficial national anthem, a centuries-old folk song associated with the cultural concept of han (deep sorrow and endurance)[10]. Produced in collaboration with Diplo, Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), Ryan Tedder, and JPEGMAFIA among others[9], the album debuted at number one on Spotify globally and broke multiple streaming records[6]. Rolling Stone called it a "reassertion of [BTS's] significance to an industry that has only grown in [their] absence"[3].

The album's release was followed the next evening by a free outdoor concert at Seoul's Gwanghwamun Square, the main gate of the historic Gyeongbokgung Palace. Approximately 250,000 people attended in person, while Netflix livestreamed the performance across 190 countries.[8] Members performed in hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) and walked a ceremonial path once reserved for Joseon Dynasty royalty, framing BTS's return as both a pop spectacle and a deeply rooted cultural homecoming.

Suga described the album's guiding ethos simply: "We thought about what is most like us. Rather than something grand, we focused on 'us' itself"[4]. RM, the group's leader and chief lyrical voice, is credited on nearly every track and has spoken of the album as an attempt to make music that "truly feels like us" after years of personal and collective transformation[7].

The album's lead single, "SWIM," was directed by Ukrainian filmmaker Tanu MuiΓ±o and filmed at the Maritime Museum of Lisbon. The music video featured American actress Lili Reinhart as its central protagonist, with the seven BTS members appearing as silent guiding figures. The video surpassed five million views within its first hour of release.[11]
