Dermot Kennedy

Dermot Joseph Kennedy was born on December 13, 1991, and grew up in Rathcoole, a town on the southwestern edge of County Dublin, Ireland. Music ran through his family from the start: his father played guitar and sang in a local band, and his mother played piano and sang in a choir.^[1] He began playing guitar at ten and writing songs by his early teens, though he did not pursue music seriously until seventeen, when he started performing at Dublin open mic nights, often driven there by his father.^[1] His mother enrolled him in classical music studies at Maynooth University in County Kildare, where he spent three years before setting out to build a career through busking, travelling between Dublin and Boston to develop his sound in front of real audiences.^[1]

The artists Kennedy cites as formative influences, Ray LaMontagne, David Gray, Damien Rice, and Glen Hansard, are all writers for whom emotional directness is a first principle and vulnerability is a craft tool rather than a confession.^[1] This lineage shaped Kennedy's approach: a grainy, deeply felt voice combined with melodic songwriting that leans into grand feeling without flinching.

After years of self-released singles and EPs, Kennedy's profile rose sharply around 2018 and 2019: NPR named him Slingshot's Best New Artist, the BBC included him in its Sound of 2019 list, and he played Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and South by Southwest in quick succession.^[1] His debut album, Without Fear, arrived in late 2019 on Interscope Records, earning him a Brit Award nomination for International Male Solo Artist the following year. In 2020, a feature on Meduza's dance track Paradise brought him to a new global audience far beyond the folk and indie circuits. His second album, Sonder, followed in November 2022, winning the RTE Choice Music Prize.^[1]

His third album, The Weight of the Woods (April 3, 2026), represented a deliberate return to roots. Produced by Gabe Simon (known for his work with Noah Kahan and Lana Del Rey) across sessions in Nashville and six weeks spent with Kennedy in Ireland, the record draws its imagery and energy from the forest near Kennedy's home on the Dublin-Kildare border.^[2][3] Kennedy has described it as a liberation from commercial pressure: a record made without the shadow of chasing chart positions, and one that treats Ireland not as a provincial limitation but as an inexhaustible source.^[2]

During the creation of The Weight of the Woods, Kennedy faced a significant personal setback: a vocal health crisis that required two weeks of complete silence.^[4] The problem had developed from improper technique accumulated over years of intensive touring, and confronting it forced Kennedy to stop entirely before he could move forward. He has described the experience as frightening, and it appears to have sharpened his clarity about what he genuinely wanted to make.^[4] In March 2025, Kennedy channelled this renewed sense of purpose into founding Misneach, the Irish word for courage, a global festival held in Sydney and Boston where he debuted new material. The Weight of the Woods, released April 3, 2026, was the full articulation of that reckoning.
